My business has been hiring again recently, and it always amazes me that some candidates seem to really miss the mark when submitting an application.
It's been a long time since I applied for a job; however, my experience as a decision maker when it comes to hiring has given me some great insight into what not to do.
Firstly, my pet hate is writing a cover letter like you're sending an SMS or tweet. The headline of this article is an example of the sorts of responses I've received in the last
couple of years. We're not limiting people's applications by character-length here; please don't write as if we are.
Another big pet peeve is misspellings. Sure, we all make mistakes, but a CV is not the place to do it. Take your time to craft your resume well, and then get someone else to go through and make corrections. At the very least, please use a spell checker!
Apply for appropriate positions, and make sure you read the job ad carefully. We've had candidates apply for work that is completely outside any previous experience or interests
they've had; if you wish to break into a new role, make sure that you write your cover letter and resume explaining this.
Research the company that's advertising the job. If they do make the time to interview you, show that you've done your research by mentioning one of their previous projects. I've interviewed plenty of candidates in my time who haven't even looked at our
website!
If you're hunting for design or development roles, build your own website. This is a great place to host your CV, provide links to work that you've been involved with, and possibly even to include a blog, which can show potential employers what interests you, and that you know the industry.
Finally, follow up with the advertiser after a few days or a week, but don't nag. Emailing or calling to ask if they've received your application, and could you make a time to meet is one thing; calling every second day to ask if you have the job doesn't go down well with the typically busy decision makers.
Best of luck with finding that dream job; I wish you the best for the future! :)
